Happy Earth Day! From our library: Books that celebrate the planet
Happy Earth Day everyone! It’s the 50th anniversary of Earth day and things are different this year, nothing we could have imagined even a couple of months ago, but, most of us are with our families, Spring is gorgeous as ever and we are grateful to the frontline workers and institutions that are working hard to protect us. As we spend more time indoors, we are sharing a few books that we are reading with our children to celebrate the magnificence and diversity of our beautiful planet.
Here We Are, Oliver Jeffers – Oliver Jeffers needs no introduction. He has tons of books that are quirky, funny, full of heart and always with the cutest illustrations. Today we are talking about one of his bestsellers – Here We Are – a book he wrote for his son as he became a parent. Its simple message feels even more relevant now – let’s look after our bodies and ourselves (most parts don’t grow back), be kind to animals (so what if they can’t speak), celebrate diversity (even if we don’t all look alike, we are all people). Definitely one for pause and reflection at this unprecedented time.
Hello Hello, Brendan Wenzel – A gorgeously illustrated book that celebrates diversity in the animal kingdom. We love how he connects the dots – from black and white to color and bright, from stripes and spots to giant and not! Every animal is beautifully rendered and the endpapers are equally brilliant with simple animal outlines that can keep kids busy for hours just trying to name them all!
Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea, Cynthia Rylant & Sucie Stevenson – This book is lovely. Our copy is creased and worn, we’ve read it so often. It’s a simple story, but very relatable for kids. Cynthia Rylant has the unmatched ability to make seemingly everyday things feel special and the Forever Sea is no exception. It has us dreaming of a beach day – lolling around, building sand castles and eating snow cones – in that special summer sunshine and frothy never-ending waters!
When Grandma Gives You A Lemon Tree, Jamie L.B. Deenihan & Lorraine Rocha – What do you do when you get a lemon tree on your birthday but you were hoping for a remote control car or a smartphone? Make lemonade, ofcourse! And convert a whole neighborhood of electronic wielding children to become first rate gardeners and plant lovers. So fun for the children! Don’t forget to buy or gift a lemon tree to someone special after you read this one.
We’d love to know what you are reading and how you are celebrating Earth Day this year. Hope your families are safe and well and we wish you a beautiful Spring and Summer!
